PRE-SEASON NEWSLETTER 2008

NETS

The nets will be put up on Sunday March 23 – that’s Easter Sunday. (If it’s wet or it doesn’t all get done then we’ll try again the following Sunday March 30)  Please would all members turn up at 10 a.m. and join in with this job. With a good turnout most of the work can be done in the first session.

NET PRACTICES will start as soon as the nets are up and when Summer time kicks in– hopefully on Tuesday April 1.

SOME EARLY FIXTURES

Saturday April 19                     1st XI friendly with Winterbourne (H).

Saturday April 26                     Two friendlies with Clevedon – 1st’s away, 2nd’s at home.

SUNDAY April 27                    3rd XI league fixture away to Whitchurch.

Saturday May 3                       League games for all 4 sides. The firsts are home to Claverham.

OVERSEAS PLAYER

Our attempts in this area have not been successful so we’ll rely on local talent – there’s plenty of that! – and I think we are due for promotion this year.

GROUNDWORK

Expect a new style ground work rota in the not too distant future – and please do your bit to help.

ECB MACHINERY GRANT

We applied for a grant under this scheme last winter for a number of items. We were not successful in the first round of applications but ECB found a little more money. We scaled down our bid and we were shortlisted as one of 5 clubs in the south-west but finally lost out to a club from Hampshire. A new round of applications has started although we are limited to one item and will be putting in a bid for a powered scarifier. The process began last week with a pitch inspection which went very well. When the results are confirmed by Somerset we fill in our forms and wait and see!

MOBILE PHONE NUMBERS

I think everyone has heard from me that we are going to put players’ mobile phone numbers instead of addresses in the fixture book this year. Many of have replied but I still have quite a few gaps. If you have NOT YET given me your number please could you either (a) let me have it or (b) tell me you don’t have one or (c) tell me you don’t want it published – by Easter please so that I can prepare the pages for the printers.

Tel:853197 or e-mail alanarm@blueyonder.co.uk.

TEAS (part 1)

My e-mail appeal for someone to take over from the Cornish family in the preparation of teas has been successful!! Matt Bryant’s girl-friend will do this when the 1st’s are at home and Dave Blower’s girl-friend will look after things when the 2nd’s are at home.  I guess Muggins here will keep the place supplied with plates, beakers, tea, squash etc. – unless anyone would like to take this over!?

TEAS (part 2)

In addition to people to make the teas we rely on a band of good-hearted ladies to serve them on the day. Alan Rogerson has done a great job in the past few years charming ladies to join the tea-rota and asked me to appeal for new volunteers. Can you find someone who could give up 2-3 hours 2 or 3 times a season to help spread the load as lightly as possible? Any ideas to Alan please on 851183.

TERRY BEVAN PRINT

Terry did an excellent print of the scene at the Johnson Somerset-Nailsea game in 2006. There is a copy in the new alley at the Grove. The cost of the framed print is £58 and Terry will be giving 20% of proceeds to the club.

TRESCOTHICK BENEFIT GAME

You may have heard the great news that Marcus Tresothick has kindly agreed to bring a Somerset CCC XI to play our 1st XI in a 20/20 style match at the Grove on Sunday 15 June as part of his benefit year. He is also supporting the Children's Hospice South West. We hope to lay on a similar event to the Richard Johnson match staged in 2006, but bigger and better. Dave Heath is co-ordinating the event again. He is looking for volunteers to help on the day and over the next 3 months. Please contact him if you can help in any way possible - email. david.heath@wessexwater.co.uk or Tel. 01275 855254.

The club needs your support to make this an occasion to remember.

We are looking for potential sponsors at all levels. If you have any personal contacts with likely organisations or individuals, please contact Dave as soon as possible. More details will follow soon.

Have a good season - when it comes
